About CSI On Location
My name is Kristie A. Shaw, and I have been employed with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) for the past twenty-eight years. Throughout my career at FDLE, I have had the privilege of serving in various capacities, each contributing to my expertise in forensic science.
I began my journey in the Trace Materials Section as a Forensic Fiber Examiner, examining fibers and providing crucial evidence for investigations. This experience laid the foundation for my passion in the field of forensics. I then transitioned into the role of a Crime Scene Analyst, where I honed my skills in investigating and processing major crime scenes. For thirteen years, from 1999 to 2012, I dedicated myself to handling complex cases, including homicides, officer-involved shootings, and hit-and-run fatalities.
In 2012, FDLE made the decision to close the Crime Scene Section of the Orlando Regional Operation Center. Embracing this opportunity for growth, I transferred to the Toxicology Section and embarked on a new chapter as a Forensic Toxicologist. Over the past eleven years, I have become a certified Blood Alcohol Analyst and Drug Toxicologist, specializing in blood alcohol testing, forensic drug toxicology, pharmacology, and retrograde extrapolation.
Crime Scene Analyst and Investigation
Throughout my career, I have pursued continuous professional development, acquiring extensive training in diverse areas of crime scene analysis and investigation. I have completed courses in Crime Scene Procedures, Crime Scene Reconstruction of Shooting Incidents, Scientific Investigation of Death, Evidentiary Photography, Bloodstain Pattern Analysis, and various other specialized fields. Additionally, I have received training in responding to terrorist bombings and handling hazardous materials, ensuring preparedness for challenging situations.
Forensic Science Studies
In 1994, I earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Microbiology with a minor in Chemistry from the University of Florida.
During my academic studies, I worked as a Laboratory Technician at the C. A. Pound Human Identification Laboratory in Gainesville, Florida. This hands-on experience allowed me to contribute to the examination and identification of human remains, conducting tasks such as maceration, skeletal analysis, and anomaly detection. I also volunteered at the District 6 Medical Examiner’s Office, broadening my understanding of forensic science.
Driven by my passion for forensics and the desire to share my knowledge, I established my own business approximately ten years ago. Through my business, I aim to inspire others by sharing my expertise gained from a diverse career in different disciplines of Forensic Science. I am dedicated to imparting important lessons I have learned and emphasizing the significance of proper handling and preservation of forensic evidence.
As I embark on this new phase, I am eager to return to my first passion, Crime Scene Investigation. The knowledge and experiences I have accumulated throughout my journey have prepared me to guide others in understanding the intricacies of the field. I am excited to continue making a positive impact and contributing to the advancement of forensic science.
